6 ways to live your best life as a downsizer
Nature walks, happy hour, or simply snuggling up with a book could be just the thing for you.
Downsizing is likely to come with some well-deserved free time. You may have less clutter to manage, fewer rooms to clean, and you could be cutting down on work as you ease into retirement.
From embracing your local surroundings to sharing your passions with your community, here are some tips on how to make the most of the opportunity.
1. Find a location that elevates your lifestyle
When envisioning your downsizing life, do you imagine staying local, or having a sea change or a tree change? Kerryn Deakon, regional manager NSW & VIC, Ingenia Communities, says finding the right environment will support your best life.
Finding the best location is always the perfect first step in real estate.
“All of our land lease communities have their own distinct personality.” she explains. “One common trait of our communities is that we focus on accessibility and walkability, so that people can get out and enjoy nature.”
“We have some beautiful locations by the beach like Natura in NSW at Port Stephens or Drift in Bargara near Bundaberg on the Coral Coast in QLD.
“Choosing the perfect location can not only enhance your daily life but can also significantly boost your overall health and wellbeing. Being surrounded by a like-minded community and having access to a variety of onsite amenity that helps promote an active and enjoyable lifestyle is a bit plus for our residents.”
Nicole Jentz, QLD community manager, Ingenia, says location has been a key consideration for the brand:
“Generally, our communities are really well located when it comes to hospitals and health and support services for our residents,” she says. “Make sure you’re ticking that box before you move in.”
2. Find a modern home, designed by downsizing experts
Buyers seeking a hassle-free design and build process will appreciate the range of home options at Ingenia Communities, specifically designed for downsizers and featuring modern fixtures and fittings.
These homes are crafted with high-quality options, offering open-plan layouts, energy-efficient appliances, and stylish finishes that ensure both comfort and elegance.
This approach also allows you to focus on what truly matters—enjoying your new home and lifestyle.
“Buyers can simply choose the home design that suits them and move straight in,” Jentz explains.
This ease and convenience make the process not only stress-free but also enjoyable, as you can quickly settle into your new home and start living your best life.
3. Join a vibrant and social community
If you downsize into a land lease community, it’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the people around you who are at a similar stage in life.
These communities offer plenty of opportunities for residents to participate in group activities, learn new hobbies, and enjoy a vibrant social life. Whether it’s joining a book club, playing sport, or attending social gatherings, the sense of community and the variety of activities available make it easy for residents to build new friendships and stay active and engaged.
Designed to foster social interaction and community engagement, they offer the chance for residents to inulge their passions – whether it’s craft beer brewing or visual art, playing pickleball or woodworking – these events encourage residents to socialise and form meaningful relationships with likeminded people.
Deakon shares numerous stories of residents finding new friends and discovering new interests after making the move.
“At Lakeside Lara, one of our Victorian communities located in Greater Geelong, one couple’s daughter said that before her parents moved in, her dad would call her every day. Now, the shoe is on the other foot. She tries to call him to check on him, and he’s always out being social!”

4. Enjoy your healthiest life yet, hassle-free
Many of us strive to be healthy and active, but life sometimes gets in the way. Downsizing into a land lease community offers a wonderful chance to embrace a healthier and more active lifestyle.
These communities provide easy access to various amenities and activities designed to promote physical well-being and social interaction. From fitness classes and swimming pools to walking trails and organized sports, residents can enjoy a supportive environment that makes it easier to stay active and healthy.
The communal setting encourages participation and helps residents maintain an active routine, enhancing their overall quality of life, explains Deakon.
“There’s always a calendar full of health and wellness or learning opportunities, or creative opportunities to partake in,” she adds.
Whether it’s participating in aqua aerobics, joining a lawn bowls team, or attending yoga classes, the supportive environment and diverse amenities make it easier to try new activities and maintain a healthy routine. These communities are designed to foster physical well-being and social interaction, providing numerous opportunities to stay active and connect with others who share similar interests.
On the other hand, if you’re after something more relaxed, “you can always have some drinks at the clubhouse with neighbours at happy hour.”
5. Share your passions
Every community is unique, shaped by the diverse individuals who call it home. As you get to know your community, you might start a social group based on your passions and expertise, suggests Deakon.
“We have a few guys at our Freshwater community in Queensland who discovered they played various instruments back in the day and have now started their own band, the Recycled Delinquents! I can’t comment if they are any good, but I do know they absolutely love getting together and making music,” Deakon says.
Jentz adds that these communities build organically, reflecting the varied interests and backgrounds of their residents. This natural development leads to a rich array of activities and groups that keep everyone engaged.
“All of the great stories, skills, and knowledge that our residents have allows us to have special interest groups, which keep everyone active and engaged,” she says.
The variety of backgrounds and experiences within the community fosters a dynamic environment where residents can share their unique talents and helps individuals stay connected and involved.
Special interest groups, ranging from fitness classes and hobby clubs to educational workshops, thrive in this supportive setting, ensuring that every community member has the opportunity to contribute and benefit.
6. Take it easy
Of course, living your best life is about balance. Jentz says sometimes you might just want to read books, play board games, or watch movies.
“Our libraries are always very popular, and we have them across all our communities. Residents manage those spaces and it’s a nice area to just read and rest,” she says.
Jentz adds that luxurious resort pools are also proving a popular addition.
“They’re certainly becoming well utilised across our communities. It’s nice for people to relax, particularly in Queensland when the weather is perfect,” she says.
“An Ingenia community is not a place to come to be bored”, she laughs.
