Exploring the sweet history of Gordonvale and the sugar-growing roots that inspired Ingenia Lifestyle Ko
20 Oct 2026
From sprawling sugar cane fields to a thriving tropical township, Gordonvale has a rich history that's helping shape an exciting new chapter for over 50s living in Far North Queensland.
Nestled at the foot of the spectacular Walsh's Pyramid, just 23 km south of Cairns, Gordonvale is a town with sugar at the heart of its history.
For more than a century, sugar cane farming has helped shape the town's identity, economy and community spirit, creating a lasting legacy that can still be seen across the surrounding landscape today.
It's this proud agricultural heritage that inspired the name of Ingenia Lifestyle Kō, which takes its name from the Hawaiian word for 'sugar'.
Gordonvale's sugar-growing story stretches back to the late 1800s, when the fertile plains surrounding the Mulgrave River attracted farmers looking to establish agricultural enterprises.
One of the area's earliest sugar ventures was the Pyramid Plantation, established in the 1880s, while the development of the Mulgrave Central Mill in the 1890s helped transform the district into an important sugar-producing centre.
The mill became a focal point for the growing township, supporting local employment, farming families and businesses as the sugar industry flourished.
Originally known as Plain Camp, and later Mulgrave and Nelson, the town officially became Gordonvale in 1914, named in honour of local pioneer John Gordon, who was closely involved in the district's early agricultural development.
Over the decades, sugar cane became synonymous with Gordonvale, with the surrounding fields, farming traditions and close-knit community helping establish the town's distinctive character.
Today, Gordonvale retains much of its historic charm, with its heritage streetscape, tropical surrounds and strong community connections reflecting the town's agricultural beginnings.
Ingenia Communities Head of Development for Queensland Adam Forrester said Ingenia Lifestyle Kō had been designed to celebrate the region's unique character while creating new opportunities for connection and active living.
“There's something special about life in the Far North, with its sunshine, scenery and easygoing lifestyle," he said.
“We wanted to capture that feeling and bring it into the heart of Ingenia Lifestyle Kō, while also honouring Gordonvale's proud sugar-growing heritage and the industry that has helped shape the town for generations.
“Gordonvale has always had a sweet side, and we're adding a little more to it.”
