Expert downsizing advice helps residents prepare for their next chapter

08 Sep 2026

For many people, deciding to downsize is the easy part. But knowing where to begin can be much harder.

From sorting through decades of treasured belongings to preparing a home for sale and creating a fresh space to call home, the process can feel overwhelming without the right support.

That's why residents at Ingenia Lifestyle Latitude One recently welcomed Newcastle-based home renovation, styling and interiors specialists Mitchell + Beasley for an informative session designed to take the uncertainty out of downsizing and help residents approach the next stage of life with confidence.

Drawing on years of experience helping homeowners transition into their next chapter, the team shared practical advice on everything from decluttering and preparing a property for sale through to styling a new home and creating spaces that feel fresh, functional and welcoming.

Mitchell + Beasley Director Aaron Beasley said the biggest obstacle wasn't usually the physical move, but the emotional one.

“The biggest challenge is the emotional attachment people have to what they've accumulated over the years,” he said.

“It's about understanding what to keep, what to let go of and recognising that while the memories stay with you, not everything needs to come with you.”

Rather than encouraging people to part with everything, Aaron said the focus was on helping them identify what truly mattered, while removing the clutter that no longer served a purpose.

He also encouraged residents to begin planning as early as possible.

“Once you've made the decision to move, follow through with it. The biggest step is deciding your current home is no longer your forever home, it’s a house you're preparing for sale and the beginning of your next chapter.”

The presentation, on Friday 24 July, explored how thoughtful preparation can make a significant difference when selling, with examples showing how cosmetic updates, professional styling and carefully curated interiors can help maximise buyer appeal.

But the support doesn't stop once the "For Sale" sign comes down.

Mitchell + Beasley works with homeowners throughout the entire transition, coordinating everything from cosmetic renovations and moving logistics through to styling their new home once they've settled into their lifestyle community.

Through the company's sister brand, MB Interiors, residents can also access interior design support to help make their new home feel like their own. An initial consultation considers the furniture and belongings they want to keep, how these will work in the new space and where new pieces could help bring the home together.

Support can range from advice on room layouts, furniture and homewares to colour, artwork, lighting and final styling, with the focus on combining much-loved existing pieces with carefully chosen additions to create a cohesive and personal new home.

MB Interiors Director Lauren Mitchell explained: “A successful move is not about trying to squeeze an old home into a new space. It is about keeping the pieces you truly love and thoughtfully adding what is needed to create a home that reflects who you are now and how you want to live."

Together, Mitchell + Beasley and MB Interiors can support residents on both sides of the move – from preparing and selling their existing property to creating a welcoming, personal and complete new home at Latitude One.

“Our goal is to remove the anxiety and pressure from the process,” Aaron said.

“We help prepare the home for sale, assist with the move and then help people create a home they love in the next stage of their lives.”

The Mitchell + Beasley event formed part of Latitude One's ongoing commitment to supporting residents beyond the purchase of their home, connecting them with trusted professionals who can make every stage of the downsizing journey as seamless as possible.

Whether preparing to move in the coming months or simply planning ahead, residents left with practical ideas, renewed confidence and a reminder that downsizing isn't about leaving a chapter behind - it's about creating space for the next one.

Mitchell + Beasley's top tips for a smoother downsizing journey

  • Start early -  once you've decided to move, begin planning and work through the process one step at a time.

  • Focus on what matters most - keep the items that hold genuine meaning and memories, and let go of things that no longer serve a purpose.

  • Declutter purposefully - knowing that there is a reason for decluttering can offer inspiration and direction.

  • Prepare your home for today's buyers - small cosmetic improvements, thoughtful styling and decluttering can significantly improve buyer appeal.

  • Ask for help - whether it's preparing your home for sale, coordinating your move or styling your new home, expert guidance can make the transition easier.

  • Embrace your new beginning - downsizing isn't just about selling a house, it's an opportunity to create a home that reflects the lifestyle you want to enjoy.
